| The Firehouse Gallery & Studios is located in a 1913 building in historic downtown Webster Groves. Webster Groves was developed before the turn of the century as a result of overcrowding in St. Louis and urban residents were leaving the city for quieter and more spacious surroundings. It was promoted as "Queen of the Suburbs" and offered residents superb housing in a country-like atmosphere, yet a short commute to downtown St. Louis jobs. The building was one of two fire departments in Webster Groves in the 1900's. It has great character, starting with the sign on the front of the building which still reads, Webster Groves Fire Co No. 1. As you step through the red door, accessible from the courtyard on the side of the building, the original fire pole can be seen standing in the same location it stood almost 100 years ago. The exposed brick wall is perfect for displaying beautiful art. Webster Groves' first fire department was oxen driven and the equipment was stored in a nearby livery stable. The firefighters were all volunteers and were called out by the ringing of the bell in the nearby Presbyterian Church. Funds were raised at carnivals and picnics to build a new firehouse and the Webster Groves Fire Co No 1 was completed in 1913. It was built for $1000. It was a working firehouse until 1974, when a new firehouse was built on Elm Ave. It soon became an architectural firm and has since been home to a publisher, artist's studio (Mary Englebreit's studio) jeweler and now the Firehouse Gallery. We like to joke and say that there have been many art related businesses in this building, so it has great "art vibes". We feel honored to have our business in this great historic building and take great pride in "managing" the space. I often find myself sitting and daydreaming about what it was like as the fire engines were pulled inside, hearing the sound of the fire alarm going off and watching the firemen slide down the pole. What a great space for the Firehouse Gallery & Studios. We hope you enjoy visiting our gallery as much as we enjoy offering a great selection of art in such a beautiful setting. Please stop in and visit us! |
